John Murray Forbes
John Murray Forbes is a well-known American businessman. He was born 23 February 1813 in Bordeaux and died 12 October 1898 in Boston. He was a railroad magnate and president of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Michigan Central Railroad in 1850s.
Forbes was born to a prominent and wealthy family. Forbes immigrated to the U.S. in his youth. James Grant Forbes (his father) was a highly respected Scottish diplomat and founder of the Brahmin merchant-dynasty in Boston. After a short while, the family settled in Milton. He was not a successful businessman, but his parents were. Forbes married Dorothy Murray, a daughter of a prominent Scottish family, in Boston in 1769. Francis Blackwell Forbes
Francis Blackwell Forbes, the son of John Murray Forbes and a member the Forbes family, was a clergyman. He was the greatgrandson of Rev. John Forbes and grandson of James Grant Forbes. He was also a pioneer for Chinese botany. He was responsible in promoting the Shanghai Country Club. He also wrote papers about the Burlingame mission. Forbes was a member of the Russell & Co. family that eventually settled in Europe in early 1880s. Forbes then became an active participant in Chinese business, founding the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company.
Forbes was born in New York City, 11 August 1839. His parents were John Murray Forbes (1807-1885) & Anne Howell (1849-1865). On 8 May 1867, he married Isabel Clark in New York City. They had three sons, William Howell Forbes (1837-1896), Henry De Courcy Forbes (1849-1920), as well as Paul Revere Forbes (1836-1936). The family owned and ran a number of businesses both in New York and around the world.
Robert Bennet Forbes
